Job Summary

The Emergency Medicine Specialists of Orange County (EMSOC), one of the largest independent groups in California, is looking for Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) who demonstrate excellence in patient care.

EMSOC’s Allied Health Providers enjoy a key role in driving improvements in acute care and provide medical services under the supervision of an EMSOC physician in an Emergency Department setting. 

Working as a member of the healthcare team, and as delegated by their supervising physician, PAs and NPs direct and oversee the management of patient care through the entirety of the patient’s Emergency Department visit. 

Essential Functions

Under the supervision of an assigned Physician, performs diagnostic and therapeutic tasks and renders varied medical services to provide comprehensive patient care, such as:

  • Obtain patient history and perform physical examination.
  • Make tentative diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of patients.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests.
  • Issue appropriate prescriptions and administer medication.
  • Prescribe therapy or medication with physician approval.
  • Perform procedures including, but not limited to, laceration repair, foreign body removal, fracture care, splinting, wound and infection care.
  • Documentation of patient visit, including medical history, physical examination, testing, progress notes, treatment, and diagnoses.
  • Monitor for effective treatment and therapy.
  • Instruct, educate, and counsel patients.   
  • Respond to medical emergencies including delivery of CPR.

  • Communicate professionally, effectively, and respectfully with patients, providers, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team.  
  • Professionally educate and communicate with patients and families as appropriate.
  • Act as patient advocate by maintaining professionalism and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.
  • Demonstrate professional and accurate medical documentation skills.
  • Demonstrate effective and efficient time management skills.
  • Adhere to practice standards, policies and procedures, and code of ethics.
  • Attend and actively participate in required meetings.
  • Continually monitor and respond to all forms of work-related correspondence including EMSOC email, voicemails, and text messages. 
  • Actively seek out continuing medical education opportunities.
  • Continually maintain all required licensure, occupational health, compliance, and credentialing requirements.
  • Provides clinical instruction to health professionals and AHP students rotating through the department.
  • May be involved in research activities performed by the service.

During the course of a typical allied health shift, the employee will be:

  • Standing - more than 2/3 of shift
  • Walking – more than 2/3 of shift
  • Sitting – less than 1/3 of shift
  • Using hands and fingers to handle or feel – more than 2/3 of shift
  • Reaching with hands or arms – 1/3 – 2/3 of shift
  • Stooping, bending, squatting – less than 1/3 of shift
  • Speaking/hearing – entire shift

Lifting

During the course of a typical allied health shift, the employee may be required to:

  • Frequently lift up to 10 pounds
  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds
  • Rarely lift up to 50 pounds

Vision / Hearing

Vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Hearing:  Must have good hearing. 

Technology

Must be able to type on computer keyboards and view computer monitors for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Education

Master's Degree in accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program

Licensure

PA-C or FNP

Certifications

Certified via National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) for physician assistants, DEA license, ACLS/PALS certification.
